New Year! New You!

5 Ways to Take Better Care of Your Skin This Year

As we embark on the New Year, many of us set personal resolutions and vow to change our lives for the better by improving our health, fitness levels, or even our personality. With so many positive goals and wishes for the New Year, now is the perfect time to start taking better care of your skin and get your skincare regime in order by following these five simple tips.

  1. Create a routine and stick to it

With all the different skincare products available on the market, it can be tempting to try out new products before the ones you currently use have had the chance to properly get to work and make a noticeable difference to your skin. Dermatologists recommend sticking to a consistent skincare routine for at least three months before making any changes. This way you can really notice the results that these products are making to your skin.

  1. It may be time for a change

Your skin changes throughout the year, and although it is recommended to maintain a skincare routine for at least three months, it is important to tailor your skincare to the time of year. The weather can have a huge effect on our skin. Colder weather is normally associated with dry skin, whereas you might find that your skin gets oilier in summer. Therefore, it is important to make sure that you are using the right products for your skin type. In addition to this, your skin changes as you age, and the skincare products that you used when you were in your 20s might not be ideal when you are in your 30s or 40s.

  1. Wear SPF all year round

Sunscreen is normally associated with the sunny summer months, however it is very important to get into the habit of applying an SPF product to your face all year round. It is recommended to wear an SPF of at least 30 or 50 to protect your skin from sun damage, including premature aging or more serious problems such as cancer. This is crucial whatever age you are – and prevention is always better than cure! At Privai we are big fans of Supergoop!

  1. Cleanse your face before going to bed

Going to sleep in your makeup may be tempting, especially when you’re tired after a long day at work. However, you may not be aware of all the things that can happen to your skin when you don’t cleanse your face before going to bed. When dead skin cells and dirt are not removed from your face, your pores can get clogged, resulting in breakouts. If you already suffer from acne, this can lead to even worse breakouts. In addition to this, the oils and dead skin cells that have been left on your skin can reduce the production of new, brighter skin cells leaving you will dull, older-looking skin. Do the wise thing – invest in a good quality cleanser and let your skin glow!

  1. Clean your makeup brushes and get rid of old makeup

Just as it is important to cleanse your face properly, it is also very important to make sure that you clean your makeup brushes at least once a week. Makeup brushes can harvest bacteria that you definitely wouldn’t want to be brushing on your skin everyday as this can lead to breakouts, skin irritation and clogged pores. Cleaning your makeup brushes will also help your makeup to apply more easily and look better on your skin. It is also worth taking some time out to go through your makeup collection and get rid of any old makeup you may still be using, as this can be irritating your skin.  As a general rule, mascaras and eyeliners should not be kept for longer than 3 months, foundations should not be kept for longer than 1 year, and powders should not be kept for longer than 18-24 months.
